Marijuana May Make Us Thinner, Even with the Munchies

By Elizabeth Simmons for DietsInReview.com

This infographic breaks down data from a new research study that finds a correlation between smaller waist size …

It sounds counter-intuitive, but marijuana may help people be thinner. The illegal drug known for causing the munchies was at the heart of a recent study (published in May’s Journal of American Medicine) that examined its effect on metabolic processes. The results, though certainly not conclusive, show a correlation between smaller waist circumference and marijuana use. Not only were users thinner, but they also appeared to be healthier overall than those who have never used marijuana.

A Colorado businessman is on a mission to start selling marijuana right next to potatoes, tomatoes and bread at farmers markets and according to CBS Denver, his inspiration comes from Seattle’s own NW Cannabis Farmers Market, which bills itself as America’s only daily cannabis market.
A similar bi-monthly marijuana market, theCannabis Farmers Market, can be found in Tacoma. Right now, the pot at these venues is not available to the general public, they cater only to medical marijuana patients and require customers to show official paperwork and IDs.
“These are individual patient farmers and under collective gardeners and under Washington law they are allowed to offer their excess medicine for donation,” NW Cannabis Market spokesman Michael Keysor told CBS Denver.

Comer Hails ‘Historic’ Hemp Vote

The amendment would allow colleges and universities to grow hemp for research purposes in states where hemp production is allowed by state law.

FRANKFORT, KY — Agriculture Commissioner James Comer cheered House passage of legislation Thursday, to allow university research on industrial hemp. The measure was an amendment to the farm bill that passed in the U.S. House of Representatives.
“Without a doubt, this was an historic day for industrial hemp in America,” Comer said. “There’s a long way to go in the legislative process. And I won’t be satisfied until Kentucky farmers can legally grow industrial hemp again. But I am pleased that we have made it this far.”

A Flourishing $40 Million Medical Marijuana Industry Helps Israelis Forget – On a kibbutz south of Tel Aviv, medical marijuana helps soothe the pain of cancer patients and Holocaust survivors

By Shira Rubin

Holocaust survivor Moshe Rute, a resident at Hadarim nursing home, where he smokes cannabis daily to fight chronic pain.(Shira Rubin)
On a recent afternoon in Kibbutz Naan, near the city of Rehovot, Israel, Moshe Rute took a hefty puff from his pot pipe, with the blessing of the government. His hands stopped convulsing, and he drifted into the story of how cannabis had done for him something that no person could—help him forget. A “Holocaust child,” he said the memories of his past—of hiding in a chicken barn in his native France to escape the Nazis, and the later death of his wife—haunted him.
For years Rute, 81, had been silenced by his psychological baggage and unsuccessful at sleep. But in 1988, when he arrived at the Hadarim nursing home in central Israel, where he was prescribed medical cannabis for a cocktail of ailments, he finally “opened up,” he said. “When I was a child my imagination saved me. I was alone, talking to the chickens. What saved me here was the cannabis.”
