PHOENIX — The American Civil Liberties Union is asking a court to allow a 5-year-old Mesa boy to use a marijuana extract to treat his debilitating seizures.
The ACLU filed a motion for a preliminary injunction Wednesday in Maricopa County Superior Court.

Jennifer May just wants her 11 year-old son Stockton to be comfortable – that’s difficult though given Stockton has five to thirty seizures a day.
He can only attend school for a few hours every week. “More than anything, it’s stressful,” she said of the feeling of helplessness she often experiences when Stockton has seizures. Stockton is on a series of medications but Jennifer says the side-effects are often a big problem. Plus, the meds are expensive – about six thousand dollars a month which is covered by the state Medicaid program.
There is something that Jennifer and other Utah families feel could make a huge difference for kids who have intense epileptic seizures. It’s called Alepsia. Its oil made from an extract from the Cannabis or Marijuana plant. The families asked the Utah Controlled Substances Advisory Board to separate Alepsia from Marijuana and not consider it a controlled substance.

It’s not exactly what gamblers would expect to see when heading to the casino, but a giant sign is making headlines in Mulvane.
Fire It Up Kansas recently launched a new digital billboard, pushing for the legalization of marijuana. It can be seen just north of the Kansas Star Casino near the turnpike toll booths.
“This is the first one that’s going up,” said Mike Golden of Fire It Up Kansas. “We expect it to keep growing and growing and growing until something changes in this state.”

The University of Utah’s top pediatric neurologist has come out in support of families seeking accessto a cannabis extract that has proven successful at stopping seizures.
“I would like to express my strong belief that [cannabidiol]-based oils (referred to here in Utah as Alepsia) should be available as soon as possible to Utah children with severe epilepsy. The substance is not psychoactíve or hallucinogenic, it contains less THC than do other materials that can be legally purchased in Utah, and it has absolutely no abuse potential,” declared U. pediatric neurology professor Francis Filloux in a Nov. 11 letter of support.
