Tresa McAlhaney, Chairwoman for the Wyandotte County Libertarian Party and potential candidate for governor in 2014, spoke at the Salina Public Library Wednesday night. Among topics discussed, bringing Industrial Hemp to Kansas.

McAlhaney explained how the crop requires less water and little pesticides. Hemp can also be fashioned into many usable products like rope, canvas, clothing, fiber boards and other items. Permitting hemp farming would not only expand farmers’ options for crops but it would provide additional stability and profitability due to diversification.

What started as a hobby… “We started with hemp necklaces… just making them. And we said — this is so easy a Monkey could do it!” Turned into a business — aptly named, Hemp Monkey.
But their profitable plant is often associated with another.

Sen. Frank Niceley, (R) Strawberry Plains, “Its not marijuana, you can’t smoke it. But you can make 1000’s of products from it. And we import about half a billion dollars of it a year.”
Dollars, Senator Frank Nicely believes could benefit Tennessee farmers.

At first glance, the Be.e scooter, invented by Dutch startup Van.eko, seems like a normal electric vehicle. It can go from 0-50 kph in seven seconds, has a 60-90km range, and its 2000-cycle battery can be fully charged using a standard 220V outlet in under four hours. Less common is a body made of hemp and flax fibers that have been impregnated with a biologically derived resin. Despite its unusual exterior, it’s safe to ride and robust enough to survive life in the city, all while maintaining plenty of environmental street cred.

The Justice Department says it is reviewing the Drug Enforcement Administration’s “Special Operations Division”—the subject of an explosive report published by Reuters on Monday. The SOD works to funnel information collected by American intelligence agencies to ordinary narcotics cops—then instructs them to “phony up investigations,” as one former judge quoted in the story put it, in order to conceal the true source of the information. In some instances, this apparently involves not only lying to defense attorneys, but to prosecutors and judges as well.

Trying to straddle a potentially dangerous social issue, Gov. Chris Christie agreed on Friday to expand New Jersey’s medical marijuana program, but stopped short of what parents of children with life-threatening diseases say is necessary to improve their access to treatment.

Mr. Christie would allow medical marijuana dispensaries to provide edible marijuana, but only for children. Parents say the edible product provides the benefits but not the high of marijuana, and makes it easier to treat children who are too impaired to smoke. Mr. Christie also eliminated a part of the law that limits to three the number of strains of marijuana that dispensaries can cultivate.

SEATTLE, WA — For years, Seattle police have looked the other way as thousands of people openly smoke marijuana on the Seattle waterfront for three days during Hempfest, the largest annual gathering of marijuana smokers in the world.  That was before voters passed I-502 last November, legalizing the possession of marijuana by adults in Washington State.
Public consumption of marijuana in Washington remains illegal, but police don’t plan on handing out tickets at this weekend’s event as thousands of marijuana supporters celebrate legalized marijuana by openly toking on the Seattle waterfront. Instead, they will be passing out bags of Doritos with legal information about the new law.
