Marijuana and the reality of the war on drugs: It’s a cash crop for Appalachia

The people of Appalachia finally have a renewable natural resource that does not leave their land raped and ruined as a result.

WYTHE CO., Va., July 17, 2012 — In 2008 alone, Appalachia grew four billion dollars worth of marijuana .  As the economy weakens and jobs become even more scarce in an already impoverished region, more Appalachians have resorted to 21st century bootlegging. In short, white lightning has been replaced by green lightning.
The mountain people have finally arrived on a renewable natural resource that does not leave their land raped and ruined as a result. Despite the formidable efforts by law enforcement to curb production, marijuana produced annually is at an all time high in the region.
In the top three marijuana producing states of the region , Tennessee, West Virginia, and Kentucky, there has been a substantial increase in plants eradicated by authorities.
In the “marijuana belt ,” a 65 county region in these three states where the growing and trafficking of marijuana has been targeted and fought with substantial federal resources, the median income has yet to reach $8,000 per year.
The choices for people here are so few. It should not come as a shock then that the people in this remote region have resorted to growing marijuana to feed their families. Given the limited options and the huge monetary benefits, who can really blame them?
It is safe to say the prohibition of marijuana has been as big a failure  as our earlier attempts to prohibit alcohol. Currently, 17.4 million Americans admit to using it regularly. In 2010 6.9% of the population reported using marijuana, up from 5.8% in 2007.

Researchers identify cannabinoid-making pathway

U of S researchers have discovered the chemical pathway that Cannabis sativa uses to create bioactive compounds called cannabinoids, paving the way for the development of marijuana varieties to produce pharmaceuticals or cannabinoid-free industrial hemp. The research appears online in the July 16 early edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).
U of S adjunct professor of biology Jon Page explains that the pathway is an unusual one, involving a specialized version of one enzyme, called hexanoyl-CoA synthetase, and another enzyme, called olivetolic acid cyclase (OAC), that has never before been seen in plants.
“What cannabis has done is take a rare fatty acid with a simple, six-carbon chain and use it as a building block to make something chemically complex and pharmacologically active,” Page says.

Children Are Using Medical Cannabis, And That’s A Good Thing

Jayden David’s father Jason reports that his walking is better — Jayden was previously non-ambulatory. He can now swim, an activity he adores, without having a seizure

“But, what about the children?!”

Why children with Dravet syndrome are using cannabis and why consistent access to their medicine is important
By Sarah Russo
CannCast.com
Parents of some children with Dravet syndrome, a rare and severe type of epilepsy, are using CBD-rich cannabis to treat their condition. Finding this medicine is difficult and getting consistent access to quality medicine is even more so.
Dravet syndrome is a severe myoclonic epilepsy whose onset occurs in infancy. Those with Dravet may have upwards of 100 seizures per day. The most intense episodes can last for 15 minutes to up to an hour. There is no known cure. The best available treatment is to minimize seizures, which are precipitated by environmental stress.
The longer a person has an epileptic attack, the higher the likelihood that prolonged damage could occur. Dravet seizures are so intense and long that brain development is delayed. In severe cases, a seizure may cause cardiac arrest. Each day can vary drastically for those with Dravet. There are a variety of pharmaceutical anticonvulsants available, but none of them eliminate seizures, and all have side effects.
Recently, a group of families affected by Dravet have turned to CBD-rich cannabis as a treatment for their children. These families have formed a Facebook group that allows members to provide support, compare notes, and to share experiences.

In the Shadow of Wounded Knee

Photo: Oglala Sioux riders

After 150 years of broken promises, the Oglala Lakota people of the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota are nurturing their tribal customs, language, and beliefs. A rare, intimate portrait shows their resilience in the face of hardship.

Almost every historical atrocity has a geographically symbolic core, a place whose name conjures up the trauma of a whole people: Auschwitz, Robben Island, Nanjing. For the Oglala Lakota of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation that place is a site near Wounded Knee Creek, 16 miles northeast of the town of Pine Ridge. From a distance the hill is unremarkable, another picturesque tree-spotted mound in the creased prairie. But here at the mass grave of all those who were killed on a winter morning more than a century ago, it’s easy to believe that certain energies—acts of tremendous violence and of transcendent love—hang in the air forever and possess a forever half-life.
Alex White Plume, a 60-year-old Oglala Lakota activist, lives with his family and extended family on a 2,000-acre ranch near Wounded Knee Creek. White Plume’s land is lovely beyond any singing, rolling out from sage-covered knolls to creeks bruised with late summer lushness. From certain aspects, you can see the Badlands, all sun-bleached spires and scoured pinnacles. And looking another way, you can see the horizon-crowning darkness of the Black Hills of South Dakota.
One hot and humid day in early August, I drove out to interview White Plume in a screened outdoor kitchen he had just built for his wife. Hemp plants sprouted thickly all over their garden. “Go ahead and smoke as much as you like,” White Plume offered. “I always tell people that: Smoke as much as you want, but you won’t get very high.” The plants are remnants from a plantation of industrial hemp—low-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) Cannabis sativa—cultivated by the White Plume family in 2000.
During World War II cultivation of hemp was encouraged in the United States, its fiber used for rope, canvas, and uniforms. But in 1970 low-THC industrial hemp was outlawed under the Controlled Substances Act. In 1998 the Oglala Sioux Tribe passed an ordinance allowing the cultivation of low-THC hemp, a crop well suited to places, like the “rez,” with a short growing season, arid soil, and weather fluctuations.
“The people of Pine Ridge have sovereign status as an independent nation,” White Plume said. “I take that to mean I am free to make a living from this land.” So in spite of reportedly stern warnings from Robert Ecoffey, the superintendent for the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) on Pine Ridge, who pointed out that Oglala Sioux sovereignty is limited and does not include the right to violate federal laws, the White Plumes planted an acre and a half of industrial hemp using seeds collected from plants growing wild on the rez. A few days before the crop was due to be harvested, in late August 2000, agents from the Drug Enforcement Administration, the FBI, the BIA, and the U.S. Marshals Service swarmed the place in helicopters and SUV s and shut down the hemp operation. The crop went feral. “It was an experiment in capitalism and a test of our sovereignty, but it seems the U.S. government doesn’t want to admit that we should have either,” White Plume said. Then he laughed in the way of a man who knows that he cannot be defeated by ordinary disappointments.

New billboard pushes odd pot partner

POSTED BY CHET HARDIN

Amend_64_Pat_Robertson_Billboard.jpeg

Marijuana legalization activists have taken one of their more surprising supporters, and slapped his face on a billboard.
As we’ve reportedPat Robertson, the famed evangelical and conservative icon, has come out in favor of the legalization of marijuana. Not just medical marijuana, but full-on, “smoke ’em if you got ’em” legalization.
The billboard, which you can see if you drive all the way to Grand Junction, is urging voters to support Amendment 64, which would decriminalize ganja, placing it alongside other drugs, such as beer and cigarettes: taxable and regulated.
Voters will have chance to vote yea or nay this November.

Arkansas marijuana act supporters need another 26,012 signatures

By Todd Gill, Flyer staff

Graphic: arcompassion.org

Supporters of a proposal to legalize marijuana in Arkansas for medicinal purposes have until Aug. 13 to submit 26,012 signatures needed to put the measure to a vote in the Nov. 6 general election.
The group, Arkansas for Compassionate Care, submitted over 65,000 signatures, of which only 36,495 belong to registered voters. The group needs a total of 62,507 signatures to place the proposal on the ballot.
The original deadline for submitting signatures was July 6, but organizers have an extra 30 days to try and make up for any invalidated names.
Despite having nearly 29,000 invalid signatures thrown out by the secretary of state’s office, the group still believes a major hurdle has been cleared.
“Our volunteers have been working across the state to meet the deadline. They’ve done a great job—and they’re ready for the next challenge,” said Melissa Fults, a volunteer and spokesperson for Arkansas for Compassionate Care. “All of us remain committed to digging in and gathering enough additional signatures to ensure this initiative is on the ballot in November.”

Belize Moves To Decriminalize Marijuana

BY
douglas-singh-belize
Former Belize Police Minister and current Chairman of the Social Security Board Douglas Singh.
The government of Belize is spearheading an initiative to decriminalize marijuana. An official press release issued late today says that a committee chaired by former police minister Douglas Singh, is inviting proposals on how to move ahead with plans to make this common herb legal for personal use in Belize. Marijuana grows wild in Belize and is used by a portion of the population but penalties are stiff and often lead to jail time even for first time offenders. The press release says:
“A committee has been appointed by the Minister of National Security to evaluate and, if appropriate, make proposals for the decriminalization of the possession of small portions of Cannabis Sativa (commonly known as Marijuana and Weed).

Medical Marijuana Raid on U.S. Hemp Family at Superstition Mountain Residence

Sheriff Paul Babeu
Pinal County
Sheriff’s Office
971 Jason Lopez Circle
Building C

Re: Formal Criminal Complaint Against Pinal County Officials
Sheriff Babeu,
On the morning of July 10, 2012, I noticed a Pinal County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) vehicle at my neighbor’s house. Several hours later this same Deputy Mark Osinski #1421 and another heavily armed officer knocked on my door and brought my wife and I out into the 108-degree Arizona afternoon.
Deputy Osinski advised us that he was going to conduct a search of my garden for marijuana and ordered us to come with him to my garden. When we got to the garden Deputy Osinski started taking photographs of my plants and telling me that I am only allowed 12 marijuana plants. I explained that I had not counted any of my plants because they were immature and had not started flowering or showing signs of sex change. Deputy Osinski and the other officer laughed and made a condescending remark about plants having a sex. I realized neither officer had knowledge of the language of proposition 203 or the cultivation of medical marijuana.
I explained and showed the officers that these immature plants did not fit the legal definition of useable marijuana. I showed the officers the several plants that were also dying and had died in the heat. I explained that the vegetation was incidental to the cultivation of my medical marijuana needs. 36-2801. Definitions (c) Marijuana that is incidental to medical use, but is not usable marijuana as defined in this chapter, shall not be counted toward a qualifying patient’s or designated caregiver’s allowable amount of marijuana.
Deputy Osinski’s armed backup declared in a challenging and intimidating manner that he had just counted 36 plants. I explained that the 36 plants he thought he counted were limbs of only 6 immature plants that had been beaten to the ground in a March hail storm and recovered by branching out, but with only one root system.
Deputy Osinski condescendingly joked about my medical condition. and as the deputies were leaving, Deputy Osinski mockingly thanked me for allowing him to photograph my cannabis plants as if I had given these heavily armed deputies permission to invade my privacy again and take photos of my property.
What Deputy Osinski brought to my home was an intimidating and provoking attitude, lies, ignorance, and deadly force with a hidden history of criminal behavior. Deputy Osinski told us that he came past our remote residence because he was interested in buying the house next to our neighbor. Deputy Osinski was clearly attempting to convince my wife and I that our neighbor had complained to police about my plants.
I spoke to our neighbor (Jerry) immediately after Deputy Osinski left and before Deputy Osinski returned with his bodyguard that afternoon. Jerry said: Deputy Osinski told him he came to the property because he was interested in buying the big house next door to us. Jerry went on to tell us that he believed that the realtor (Sgt. Robert Nye, Apache Junction Police Department) had put Deputy Osinski up to harassing my family over the medical marijuana.
These Deputies came to my residence with no knowledge of Arizona’s medical marijuana law or cultivation of cannabis. The fact that Deputy Osinski tried to convince my wife and I that our neighbor Jerry had “snitched me off” and covered up his association with Sgt. Robert Nye is very problematic.
This illegal raid on my family and property on July 10, 2012 goes back to my original complaint against Deputy Osinski, Raul Alvarado, P. Ramirez and the others listed on my August 4, 2006 complaint to Sheriff Chris Vasquez, Robert Carter Olson, Jerold Monahan, Sandie Smith and others.
This is not my family’s first encounter with Deputy Osinski or the Pinal County Sheriff’s Department. On August 1, 2006 Deputy Osinski raided my family residence with a SWAT team of Deputies and 4 County Vehicles. They got lost and stormed into my neighbor’s property and almost started World War III. Then they stormed into our home, ordered my son on the ground and Deputy Raul Alvarado brutally manhandled and terrified my daughter.
These heavily armed deputies listed in my complaint filed August 4, 2006 did everything humanly possible to force my unarmed family into a physical confrontation. As Deputy Raul Alvarado assaulted my daughter, Deputy Osinski and the other officers watched. Deputy Ramirez and Alvarado became so violently out of control we pleaded with Deputy Osinski to call for backup and a supervisor for everyone’s safety. Deputy Osinski smirked, smiled, and refused.
My daughter went into a deep depression over this for years and for good reasons. When she was 16 years old Pinal County Deputies stopped her, took her to Florence and male Deputies from the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office strip searched her and made her bend over, squat, and cough as they watched. She has never been the same since that night.
I was serving an 8-year sentence in Federal Prison for a marijuana charge at that time. I was not told what happened until I was released. I ran for Vice President of the U.S. in 1996 while in the custody of the U.S. Department of Justice. We gained enough votes to have my name in the National Media and included in the National Archives of Presidential Candidates.
I felt guilty that local authorities may have targeted my daughter because of my religious and political beliefs. An investigation of this matter may discover that my family has been targeted out of retaliation for my outspoken nature and my family’s religious and political beliefs, as well as the property we own.
When the August 1, 2006 incident happened with Deputy Osinski and Deputy Raul Alvarado I filed a formal complaint with Sheriff Vasquez and other high level Pinal County Officials. This complaint was never resolved and it is just the tip of an out of control iceberg of outrageous behavior on the part of Pinal County Deputies, Sheriff Chris Vasquez, Robert Carter Olson, Sandie Smith, Jerald Monahan, Judge William O’Neil and others. My family has been targeted and emotionally tortured while these rogue public servants continue to climb the ladder of successful corruption in Arizona.
According to Deputy Osinski’s August 1, 2006 report (060801036) he stated his purpose for this heavy-handed raid was because the property owner’s feeble-minded grandmother reported a “VERBAL DISPUTE” with her grandson. Please note that Sgt. Ellis approved this report on “August 29, 2006”.
Officer Osinsky mentioned nothing about the violent and vicious assault on my son and daughter on August 1, 2006. (See report 060801036). Ultimately these complaints disappeared under the desk and guidance of Robert Carter Olsen.
If you read Deputy Osinski’s police report and compare that police report to my family’s complaints and the other police reports from August 4, 2006 to the present, you will see a documented criminal pattern.
I don’t know how many people have been falsely charged, convicted, battered, sexually assaulted, or killed by these deputies and covered up by Robert Carter Olson. However there is ample evidence that on August 1, 2006 from Deputy Osinski to Robert Carter Olson, Raul Alvarado was protected until Sheriff Babeu fired him for torturing a toad with a Taser in August of 2009.
The Arizona Republic covered Deputy Raul Alvarado’s toad frog torturing story and fell a little short of mentioning Robert Carter Olson’s name as the Pinal County Official that overturned Sheriff Paul Babeu’s decision to fire Raul the Toad Torturer. Please read this story about Deputy Raul Alvarado and try to imagine what my family went through on August 1, 2006: http://www.azcentral.com/community/pinal/articles/2010/10/28/20101028pinal-deputy-fires-taser-at-frog-brk.html
My neighbors, the press, and several thousand Internet followers are aware of these incidents and complaints. I feel that the only thing Pinal County Officials fear is exposure and bad publicity. Everyone that lives near me is aware of my religious and medical use of cannabis for the past 40 years. Additionally, they are aware of how corrupt and dangerous these same Pinal County Deputies are.
I am requesting immediate and specific protection in an expedient and meaningful manner and an expedited investigation concerning these rogue deputies and high level Pinal County Officials. Additionally, I request meetings with Sheriff Paul Babeu and his internal affairs officer to address these problems with this long, ongoing, culture of corruption in Pinal County that has cost my family and our community so much.
I swear that everything I have stated in this complaint is true to the best of my knowledge and if I am called on to testify in this matter I will do so in good conscience.
Respectfully Submitted,
——————————————-
Arlin Troutt

Marijuana initiative qualifies for Ore. ballot

Source: AP State News

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Advocates who want to legalize marijuana in Oregon say their measure has been officially certified to appear on the state’s November ballot.
The secretary of state’s office confirmed Friday that the petition organizers collected enough valid signatures for the measure to qualify.
The measure would allow the cultivation and sale of marijuana to adults through state-licensed stores and would allow adults to grow pot for their own use.
